By JEFFREY KLEINBERG-DANIELSEN-PASSEIRA The myth that fiber has no downsides has grown in popularity, especially among older generations.
“I believe it is true that the average fiber pillow is a good product for comfort,” says Diane L. Hausmann, professor of physiology and biochemistry at Johns Hopkins University and an expert on the biological and psychological effects of fiber.
But it’s important to remember that fiber is not necessarily bad for you.
“We can’t always measure fiber and then say, ‘It’s bad for us,’ ” says Hausman.
Fiber has many benefits, like lowering blood pressure and reducing inflammation.
It’s a powerful way to prevent or treat certain infections, like HIV.
Fiber also may help people cope with the aging process.
“People who are in their 80s or 90s are very sensitive to certain kinds of infections, so they need to stay away from certain fiber products,” says Dr. Joseph S. Tyminski, president of the American College of Sports Medicine.
“For them, it’s better to have a pillow that’s designed for someone who’s older, someone who has more of a sensitivity to fibers, or someone who is more sensitive to inflammation.”
Fiber is one of the most popular forms of exercise because it’s relatively low in calories and high in protein.
But if you’re trying to lose weight or boost your metabolism, you might be better off with a foam fiber pillow, like those sold by FiberOne, which are made from the fibres of cotton, flax, and hemp.
The fiber in FiberOne products is extracted from plants and then spun into a stiff ball to form a dense fiber that absorbs and holds water.
The balls have a shape that makes them flexible.
FiberOne offers fiber pillows, a foam mattress, and other products, including a fiber pillow for adults that’s made with hemp.
Fiber is a staple in the diets of millions of Americans, including many people who have lost weight and are trying to maintain a healthy weight.
“When I’m not in the gym, I don’t exercise much,” says Kelli, a 29-year-old New York City native who lost weight with a fiber-free pillows.
“My goal is to lose it back.”
Hausmans research indicates that fiber consumption can help people lose weight, especially if fiber is combined with other foods that provide fiber.
Fiber supplements like fiber-containing drinks and snacks like baked goods can help reduce weight.
The American Heart Association recommends that adults ages 50 and older consume two grams of fiber per day.
Fiber can also help prevent heart disease, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics.
Fiber’s health benefits include lowering blood sugar levels, preventing constipation, and preventing high blood pressure.
The ADA recommends that people with diabetes take up to 1 gram of fiber daily.
“The American Heart and Stroke Association (AHS) recommends that those with type 2 diabetes, those who are overweight, or those who have hypertension take up 2.5 grams of fibre daily,” says Linda M. Burt, a member of the AHS Advisory Committee on Dietary Fiber.
But some experts say that people should also get more fiber from plant foods.
“If you have any type of fiber, you should eat at least 1 gram,” says Hsu.
“Plant foods, such as soybeans, can be very high in fiber.
They have fiber in them.”
Fiber-rich foods can also provide fiber in a number of other ways, such a fiber bread made with whole-wheat flour, which is a low-fat option, or a fiber cake with shredded coconut, which provides more of the fiber in the form of protein.
Fiber-containing beverages, such like fiber sodas and energy drinks, are often packed with a variety of plant-based ingredients, like hemp, fluff, or hemp seed.
But consumers shouldn’t expect to get fiber-rich drinks or snacks at the grocery store just because it says fiber in it, says Lue Hsu, vice president of marketing and public relations at FiberOne.
“Many people have heard of fiber drinks, and they’re probably not sure what the fiber content is in the drink,” she says.
“But there are fiber-based beverages out there, too.
We try to educate consumers on fiber, fiber products, and fiber products that don’t contain fiber.
The more people are educated about the fiber, the more fiber is available in the beverages and the better they will feel.”
Lue’s company sells fiber-infused drink products, like a fiber drink called the FiberOne UltraFiber Drink.
Fiber and fiber-filled beverages are especially popular in China, where people are buying more than a third of their daily fiber intake from processed foods, says Hsue Hsiao, director of global marketing at Fiber One.
“You can find these drinks in a variety types
